13th November 2012    Steering Group meeting for
the Academi Heddwch Cymru - Wales Peace Academy (AHC / WPA)

Present Stephen Thomas, Robin Gwyndaf, Max Wallis, Tony Young, George Crabb, Anne Greagsby, Jane Harries, Kay Holder, and Diana Marquand    

First meeting of the steering group – role
1.    to keep people informed about the proposal -  important to have a focused steering group
2.    prepare the re-launch Conference – what happens afterwards

What is March Conference about
Purpose - to take the temperature (Robin) with aims
to share information/vision, produce an outline strategy
to present information re. Academi models and what similar European institutes are doing
to agree the framework for the Academi; terms of reference (not Constitution)
to elect a Steering group to take it forward

Establish as a Project within the Centenary of the 1914 Outbreak of 1st World War to purpose – to remember the past, remember suffering and look for a better future
Robin proposed this – to claim some funds to promote peace – enthusiastically agreed.
The Centenary has £150M funding, is under Deian Hopkins, could kick-start the Academi

Initial funding (for Conf.) from Cynefin y Werin, Diana suggested ‘Women making a difference’ funds from Euro-Commission; also ‘cloud’ advertising

suggestions for Break-out groups/Workshops with prepared papers, perhaps from working groups prepared over next few months; to go into Conference proceedings
Ecocide
Peace-keeping  and Conflict resolution in divided societies;
Economy  for Peace
Role in Scrutiny (rather than campaigning) and global governnance
Research Arms conversion
Education – culture of peace in schools – in Welsh history
Tools for peace (peter polish)

Conference structure
Marie: contributors should be broad based – include workshops
Diane; break into small groups to enable people to express fears and hopes
Peter:  keep to themes – future strands come out of the group work
Kay: exhibitions by existing Welsh projects
Involve young people – eg. video made beforehand by young people

Stephen: 3 or 4 divisions of time:  Background - Vision – Speakers - Framework  
Speakers on 4-5 topics; Afternoon getting it together and moving on
Too little time for speakers from other institutes
